General Dentistry & Prevention of Oral Disease

Caring for Your Dentition

Looking after your teeth and gums is essential for both your oral health and overall wellbeing. General dentistry focuses on prevention, early diagnosis, and effective treatment of common dental problems such as Dental Decay/Caries, Gum Disease (Periodontitis) and Tooth Wear/Cracked Teeth.

Whether you’re visiting us here at Aron Marcus Dental Practice for a routine check-up, or need more advanced care, our goal is to keep your smile healthy, comfortable, and confident.

Check-Ups

Regular dental check-ups are the foundation of good oral health. During your appointment, we carefully examine the head/neck & lymph nodes, as well as the teeth, gums and soft tissues of the mouth to screen for tooth decay, gum disease, tooth wear and any soft tissue pathology. Early detection allows us to treat problems before they become more serious or painful.

We may also take x-rays or refer you for a CBCT 3D scan when needed to assess areas not visible to the eye. Routine visits are typically recommended every six months, although this can vary depending on your individual needs.

Stages of Tooth Decay

Causes of Tooth Decay

Bacteria and Plaque: Your mouth naturally hosts bacteria that form a sticky film called plaque over the teeth.

Sugars and Carbohydrates: When bacteria feed on sugars or cooked starches from your diet, they produce harmful acids.

Acid Attacks: These acids constantly strip the enamel of essential minerals. If you snack frequently or sip sugary drinks throughout the day, teeth lack the time to recover.

Reduced Saliva: Saliva washes away food debris and neutralizes acids. A persistent dry mouth or conditions like GERD significantly elevate your cavity risk.

Treatment & Prevention of of Tooth Decay

Common Treatments

Fluoride Treatments: For very early decay (white spots), professional fluoride treatments can help remineralize and reverse the damage before a hole forms.

Dental Fillings: Once enamel breaks and a cavity (hole) occurs, a dentist must drill out the decayed tissue and fill it with composite resin or porcelain.

Crowns: If the decay is extensive and not enough healthy tooth structure remains, a custom-fitted cap or crown is placed to protect the tooth.

Root Canal: If the decay reaches the sensitive inner pulp and nerves (causing a severe toothache or abscess), a root canal is performed to clear the infection and save the tooth.

Tooth Extraction: In cases of severe, non-restorable decay, the tooth may need to be pulled to prevent infection from spreading to the bone.

Prevention Strategies

Brush Twice a Day: Brush for two minutes, twice a day, specifically using a fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride actively strengthens and repairs weakened enamel.

Clean Between Teeth: Use dental floss or interdental cleaners daily to remove plaque and trapped food particles from areas a toothbrush cannot reach.

Limit Sugar Intake: Cut back on sugary snacks, juices, and fizzy drinks. Try to consume them alongside main meals rather than snacking throughout the day.

Routine Dental Check-ups: Visit your dentist regularly for professional examinations and cleanings. They can spot and treat small cavities before they progress into more serious conditions.

Preventative Dentistry

Preventative dentistry is all about stopping problems before they start. Alongside your check-ups, we offer professional cleaning with our hygienist to remove plaque and tartar build-up that cannot be eliminated by brushing alone.

We also provide personalised advice on brushing techniques, flossing, and diet to help you maintain excellent oral hygiene at home. Treatments such as fluoride applications and fissure sealants can offer additional protection, particularly for children and patients at higher risk of decay.

Children’s Dentistry

We understand that positive early experiences are key to lifelong dental health. Our children’s dentistry services are designed to be gentle, friendly, and reassuring to build up confidence to children from a young age, and to help children acclimatise to the dental environment and feel comfortable and confident long term.

We monitor the development of your child’s teeth, provide preventative treatments, and offer guidance on habits such as thumb sucking and diet. Education plays a big role, helping children learn how to care for their teeth in a fun and engaging way. Our aim is to build confidence and establish healthy routines from a young age.

We warmly welcome children with additional needs. If your child would benefit from extra time or specific support to help them feel at ease, please let us know in advance so we can make the appropriate arrangements and ensure their visit is as calm and positive as possible.

Teeth Coloured Fillings

If decay occurs, fillings are a common and effective way to restore the tooth. We use modern, tooth-coloured materials to ensure a natural appearance while strengthening the affected area.

In cases where decay has reached the inner part of the tooth (the pulp), root canal treatment may be required.

Nervous Patients

We recognise that visiting the dentist can be a source of anxiety for many people. Our team is experienced in supporting nervous patients with a calm, understanding approach. We take time to explain each step of your treatment and ensure you feel in control throughout your visit.

Your comfort and peace of mind are always our priority.
